Outdoor race: packraft vs. walker
Winter – that’s enough to make packraft rafting not sound like a good idea. When I imagined water under my feet, soaked gloves and jacket cuffs, I knew I would choose the land route. I decided to take a walk through the mountains – winter aura and the additional motivation to reach my destination first, I treated as perfect conditions for the trip.
8:00 – we get in the car and head for Lake Miedzybrodzkie. Me with a light backpack and an equally light head. Michael, with all the equipment that was/could be needed during the water crossing. Although he didn’t say it out loud, I could see the uncertainty – after all, this was going to be the first winter rafting trip, and anything new stirs up excitement, but also a slight apprehension.
Parking, a quick repack, we set off towards the river. A few moves with the pumping bag and packraft is ready to go. Moments later, Michal bounces off the shore – the magical winter aura momentarily dispels all doubts. I walk along the river and watch it flow, another moment and it will disappear from my sight – I will bounce into the mountains to meet it again in a few hours at the dam in Porąbka. 10 kilometers through the mountains, 6.5 by water.
No time to procrastinate, a race is a race. Time – start.
