Columbia Escape Summit OutDry trekking boots – test

First impression: lightweight, sleek and not badly made. Columbia Escape Summit OutDry women’s trekking boots – how they perform on the mountain trail? Tested by Wiola Imiolczyk.

I have high expectations for approach shoes. What I call comfort is the relative softness while holding the foot well. I want the sole to provide guaranteed traction and cushion my steps well. The shoes must perform in a wide variety of conditions – both on a soft forest path and on a rocky climb up a wall. On sunny afternoons and during an unexpected break in the weather. The Escape Summit OutDry model by Columbia did not have an easy task.

Purpose

The Columbia Escape Summit OutDry is an ankle-length, lace-up model. According to the manufacturer, the purpose of the shoe is hiking in any terrain. I think the model will perform well during moderate activities, but may prove to be too soft on rougher terrain, such as scree or rocky trails.

Material and workmanship

The upper of the shoe is made of mesh with additional reinforcement at the toe and heel. Underneath the mesh, there is a layer of OutDry laminate, which has been welded to the outer material – the waterproof membrane provides good protection in the rain, while still being quite breathable. For many female users, this will be a big advantage of the model. Personally, I’m one of those people who get cold quickly, so after my first hike in the Escape Summit OutDry boots (at temp. about 10 degrees) I already knew that next time it would be worth remembering warmer socks.

The upper is almost completely free of seams or joints and appears durable. The sewn-in tongue not only prevents small stones or dirt from getting into the shoe, but also comfortably wraps the foot. In addition, it provides cushioning when walking down. The inside of the shoe is soft and adapts perfectly to the shape of the foot. In this model one can feel the effect of the Navic Fit System technology, which is supposed to lock the midfoot in the shoe. Indeed, the Escape Summit provide a sense of foot stability and comfort, which I would undoubtedly rate as the model’s greatest advantages.

Sole

The model is characterized by a rather stiff, for such a lightweight shoe, sole made with Adapt Trax technology. The midsole uses Techlite+ technology to add cushioning to the shoes. The layer absorbs shocks and impacts, which will be appreciated during uncomfortable descents on uneven surfaces.

However, it is important to remember that these are not tough and armored boots. According to the manufacturer, the pair in size 7 (US) weighs 608 g. For a boot in this class, they are surprisingly lightweight, which we notice after the first meters of trekking. The longer the excursion, the more one appreciates the low weight of the model – the boots do not weigh, but only provide good protection for our feet.

The perks of a lightweight shoe may not suit those accustomed to hiking with a heavy backpack. The soft upper will not protect the ankle from injury as well as a high ankle boot would do.

Details

The Columbia Escape Summit OutDry boots not only wear well, but are also comfortable to wear. The binding system easily adjusts the shoe to the foot, which makes us describe it as a universal width model. The built-in high tongue and ankle-length upper are, in my opinion, the best choice for autumn hiking, giving protection from moisture and cold. The model I tested, in black with mint accents, looks good enough to successfully perform in the city as well.

Summary

I tested the shoes in a variety of circumstances – both on the mountain trail and during bike tours. I tested how they would cope in inclement weather. Given my expectations of approach shoes, it’s hard for me at this point to find weaknesses in the Escape Summit model that would significantly affect the overall impression of the.

Autumn has just begun – no doubt the Columbia Escape Summit OutDry boots will accompany me on more than one hike this year. The model is so comfortable and versatile that it has become my obvious choice during any moderate outdoor activity.
